The Endless Savannah

With its huge plains and scenic, spectacular landscapes, Serengeti is the dream with a capital D for many safari travellers.

The name Serengeti derives from the Maasai word siringet, which roughly means ‘a place where the plain continues indefinitely’. The park is located in northern Tanzania and is an obvious main destination all year round.

Since 1981 it is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wildlife and Nature

Serengeti hosts the world’s largest terrestrial animal population. Here you have the best chance of seeing all the The Big Five—lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino. But there are also many other exciting species to experience. Giraffes, antelopes and other cloven-hoofed animals graze the plains, hippos and crocodiles enjoy the coolness of rivers and water holes, and predators such as hyenas and cheetahs have plenty of prey to feed on.

Serengeti is also world famous for The Great Migration, where over a million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles migrate between the grasslands of Serengeti and Masai Mara. This spectacular event counts as one of Africa’s seven natural wonders.

Serengeti’s ecosystem is one of the oldest in the world. The classic savannah, in some areas strewn with acacia trees, gives a sense of timelessness. Here, the rhythm of life is governed by the sun’s passage across the sky and by the changes in weather and seasons, as it has been for thousands of years.
